Who remembers the tank Nokia 3310 or the ahead-of-time Nokia 6610? Well I certainly have so many memories of Nokia phones just like many of you do. Playing Snake and later Bounce, no front camera but still be proud of those 500×500 pixel images. For many of us Nokia was the first handset we ever had. Therefore, seeing it return with an Android operating system ready to challenge the current market players is fulfilling. The same sentiment is apparent for the Nokia 8 Sirocco. Priced at Rs. 49999, the smartphone is now available on affordable EMIs. Let’s look at why you should get it and where to get it from. We also look at its features and specifications.

Nokia 8 Sirocco Review
|Processor||Qualcomm Snapdragon 835|
|Screen Size||5.5 inches P-OLED touchscreen|
|Camera||Dual Rear 12 MP, Front 5 MP|
|OS||Android 8.0 (Oreo)|
With the launch of the Nokia 8 Sirocco, the Finnish smartphone maker entered into the premium smartphone segment. Its cousin, the Nokia 7 Plus handled the mid-range segment. Last year’s Nokia 8 is now being updated as the Nokia 8 Sirocco for 2018. The ‘Sirocco’ mirrors the stylish Nokia 8800 Sirocco edition from the past. It is a well thought of nostalgic take on times when Nokia was at the top of the phone segment.
Once unboxed, the smartphone looks much more premium compared to the Nokia 8. It can also hold its own against the current crop of smartphones in the market. With a steel frame and a glass back, the Nokia 8 Sirocco looks solid indeed. The back and front come with a 2.5D glass finish. The steel frames are met with the curved glass on the sided. With onscreen navigation button replacing the tactile buttons, there is an increase in screen size felt. The design is different compared to the bezel-less designs seen around. Despite this, its 16×9 aspect ratio 5.5-inch QHD display makes up for it.
There is a longer speaker grill at the top. There is no notch, with the traditional top and bottom bezels making a comeback. The volume rocker, metallic power button, and SIM tray are all embedded on to the metal frame. The dual rear cameras are placed within a raised housing. There is a dual LED flash and microphone unit on either side of the camera. The bottom of the devices comes with the speaker grill, microphone, and USB Type-C port.
Taking a look inside, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 834 SoC comes with 6GB of RAM and an internal storage of 128GB. The dual rear cameras come with 12MP shooters. The front camera is a 5MP sensor. The phone can only support 1 SIM and can store charges up to 3260 mAh. It also supports Quick Charge. The display features Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The QHD is made up of 1440×2560 pixels with a density of 534 PPI. This makes the screen super sharp.
The display plays wells in lit environments. The smartphone comes with Android One. This is a partner program with Google where devices gain faster access to latest security updates for new Android-enabled smartphones. The smartphone runs on Android 8.0 Oreo. This means that Sirocco users get an unmodified Android experience. The Nokia apps embedded are Files, Support, and Camera. There are custom software icons, giving the apps a uniform look. There are hardly any lags while usage.
The powerful Snapdragon 835 chipset allows smooth usage without tending to get heated during prolonged gaming sessions. While making calls, the VoIP app allowed for clear connectivity and voice clarity. The camera images possess good color reproduction with a good balance of sharpness and balance. The low-lit environment images are clearer compared to the previous Nokia 8. The smartphone comes with dual-LED dual-tone flash. You receive a 2x optical zoom with Carl Zeiss lens. You can shoot 4K videos at 30fps from the rear camera.
Nokia 8 Sirocco allows the user to shoot a ‘Bothie’. It is an effect where the rear camera clicks a larger image, with the front camera taking a post-card sized image. Both are combined giving you a ‘Bothie’. You also get the ‘Live Bokeh’ mode, Pro mode, Photo mode and Panorama mode. With an OZO spatial audio system recording ambient sounds, the video quality stands out. The battery life can easily last a day.
All in all, Nokia’s flagship contender will endear to its fan following and be a major smartphone player in the years to come. The Sirocco is proof of that.
